Finding the possibilities

I was excited to read a post by Chris Hutchinson of Trebuchet Group yesterday entitled Overcoming the hurdles to people seeing possibilities.  Chris explored what he sees as the stage set behind what identifies powerful possibilities, namely, matching:

  • Unmet capacity
  • Our desire to help
  • Unmet needs and wants

I’d recommend that you jump over there and read it.

What’s thought-provoking for me is that if you only have two of the above three factors, you have significant barriers against movement.  If I want to do something (desire) and have the ability (capacity), but don’t actually believe I have a need, then it’s just creating additional problems for me to solve – and who needs more problems?  If I have the ability and the need, but no desire, then the objection is that it’s just an unwelcome distraction.

I have a chance to talk with Chris about this more this afternoon, so I’m going to ask him how the discussions are going around this model with his potential customers.  But I’m also interested in how to apply this at the personal level, for leadership and self-induced change, in addition to the customer/supplier relationship that he describes.
