I was doing an interesting exercise with my own coach this morning, working on a major topic for my fledgling company. In particular, we had a great exploration of resources that I have available to me. It ended up turning into a “homework assignment” that I’m currently working on.
Here’s what I learned: You always have more resources available than you think.
Even though I’ve seen this exhibited many times, for some reason it still surprises me. For what I’m working on, my first set of resources falls into my category of People. There were so many that I immediately had to split that into several lists – people I know in a coaching context, family and friends, other people I’ve worked with, and social circles.
Just to give you an idea of how quickly this explodes: I have many hundreds of people in my “coaching context” list. Folks from my previous employment. Coaches in the community. Coaches I’ve had great conversations with. People who taught me coaching skills. People in coaching companies. Coaches who work for other companies.
Amazing. And that’s just one list!
Another set of resources for me I call Intellectual Property. Yeah, it’s a techie term, but it just refers to things that I own that could potentially be sold or leveraged or built upon. That includes things like my book, presentations I’ve given, workshops I’ve delivered, magazine articles I’ve written, and so on. I’m starting to realize that there’s a fair body of work here which may not have been tapped for delivering more value to my customers.
My third category I’m calling Skills and Knowledge. These are less tangible things that are locked up in my head, but that I can call upon to achieve my goals. That includes my training, what I’ve learned on the job and outside my job, and especially the unique attributes that people know me for.
This is how far I am at the moment, but this is growing rapidly.
What do you think my fourth category should be?
